Parracombe Prize 2023 – Open for Entries!

Parracombe Prize

A short story competition is offering a £50 prize for the best entry from a North Devon writer.

Since it started three years ago, the competition launched in a North Devon village has attracted writers from around the world. Thanks to sponsorship from Lyn Lions Club, writers in the region will now be eligible for a new £50 award. And all writers who take part will be competing for £150, after Lyn Lions Club cash boosted the top prize.

During the first lockdown three friends with shared literary interests decided to launch a short competition to raise money for local good causes and called it the Parracombe Prize.

At first it was thought its appeal would lie with aspiring writers in and around Exmoor. Yet, thanks to the power of social media, the competition quickly went global. In 2020, there were some 430 entries from all over Britain as well as India, across Europe, America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Indeed, the winner of the first competition was born in South Africa, lived in Switzerland and wrote about life in Japan – although happily one Lyn Valley writer was shortlisted.

By the end of the competition about £3,500 was raised for Parracombe Community Trust, which is responsible for a village hall, social housing project and new community shop. Given this success the competition was repeated last year, attracting slightly fewer entries but registering a similar economic benefit. The third competition was opened for entries on 1 November and organisers are hoping more local people will now take part.

It costs £5 to enter, with all short-listed stories being compiled into an anthology, which will be published by Amazon and sold at £8.99. As well as the local and winning prizes, there is a £50 second prize and two further awards at £25.

The maximum word count is reflected in the year, so Parracombe Prize 2023 will take stories of any length up to 2,023 words. It costs £5 to enter and authors are deemed local if they live in post codes EX31 to EX39. Entry closes on January 31. For more details go to prize.parracombe.org.uk.
